Purpose of the RSG

· Develop strategies specific to their region to improve education for gifted and talented students:
· Become familiar with the GATE website and associated smart tools, and online community
· Align approaches to GATE in schools with Ka Hikitia, the Pasifika Education Plan, NCEA, National Standards and areas of government priority
· Grow coherence and coordination of approaches between schools and:
o Professional Learning and Development providers , Ministry regional education and performance groups (EPGs), GAT stakeholder providers , Local industry and businesses
· Explore ways of disseminating and sustaining best practice within the region, including regional symposia and online communities
· Identify and support potential schools which may take a regional cluster leadership role
· Contribute to and attend the National GATE hui

Goal
A. To raise awareness of Gifted and Talented Education in the Dunedin region
i. convene a baseline day where we share strategies and practices so that we start on the same page- then collate broader regional input from our shared networks
ii. raise awareness and therefore confidence in identification of GAT students
iii. improve opportunities for Maori and Pasifika students
iv. disseminate and share best practice – professional development




Building whole school capability in a sustainable way that allows schools to self-manage their requirements under National Administrations Guideline 1 (iii) c
B. To provide school-based professional development on:


· identification processes
· what does it mean to be gifted and/or talented?
· how do we help GAT students?
· resources eg the Gifted website
· information
· mentoring
C. to establish a progression from:
Regional strategy>
Support network strategy>
Student identification, advocate and support strategy>
Interaction with the students
D. to conduct a regional Student hui to share their experience of the strategy





Support the implementation of National Standards and gathering of baseline data that allows for the longitudinal tracking of students’ achievement

E. Establish a database of contacts- people who can help/lead/assist in identifying and assisting Maori and Pasifika students




Collaborative service delivery across numerous providers that provides a continuum of support (driving whole school capability)
F. to establish a community of interest through
i. Creating a structured list of GAT contacts and mentors throughout Dunedin and the region, and nationally
ii. Establishing a network of GATE teachers both regionally and in clusters
iii. Sustain the current website
iv. Creating a city-wide GATE meeting for:
· Secondary teachers
· Primary teachers
to organise information, professional development, resources, planning, mentoring and funding
v. Establish an internet based mentoring programme
